5 History Making Women in STEM

When I was a little girl, my grandfather used to take care of my sister and I once a week during the summers. He was a college anatomy, biology and zoology professor, so his ideas of play dates involved trips to the Natural History Museum, the La Brea Tar Pits, the California Science Center or the Botanical Gardens. And I LOVED it. I was already a curious kid, but it was these trips and my family’s encouragement to learn and explore that solidified my path as a lifelong learner. My mom recently told me that she never scolded me about all the time I spent indoors on the computer or playing video games or reading because she knew that technology was the future, and could be a viable career choice for me. I grew up wanting to be an astronaut or a scientist—for the longest time I bounced between archaeologist and paleontologist. Of course, as I grew older, my path changed (I still consider being a writer as someone who wants to discover new things), but my love for science and technology has never faded.

As a woman, I have to look back and admire the pioneering women who made history in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Without them, I would have never been able to even consider entering into a scientific field. So in honor of March being Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science & Engineering Month, here are 5 women in STEM who made history and paved the way for little girls and boys alike.

Meet Your Next Time Suck: The Elder Scrolls Online

For two weekends now, I’ve had the pleasure of beta testing the highly anticipated Elder Scrolls Online. Peter was the one who first turned me on to the Elder Scrolls franchise, starting with Oblivion, and he has recently become immersed in the world of Skyrim. But I’ll admit it: They’re not really my type of game. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fantasy and medieval geek, so rich storylines and immense world was really attractive. Sadly, it was the gameplay that has deterred me from these games. I’ve never been great at the first person POV games because I get so stupid nervous when I can’t see what’s behind or to the side of me—I barely got through the Fallout games with my sanity—so I tend to die a lot and freak out.

But I knew I was missing out on something amazing when it came to the Elder Scrolls games, which is why I jumped at the chance to get a peek at the upcoming The Elder Scrolls Online MMO. I knew that the MMO would provide the third person action I enjoyed, while still immersing players in the rich mythology of the Elder Scrolls, and let me tell you: fans of both the Elder Scrolls and MMOs will be pleased with this game.

Guys, an Xbox is not worth dying for

As a gamer, you spend literally hundreds, if not thousands, of hours playing games, beating bosses, and earning achievements. I know that if I go through a level and it doesn’t save properly, I’m a little miffed that I have to complete the mission or level all over again. I can only imagine the anger I’d feel if I lost all of my progress on games like Skyrim. But seriously: I love our consoles and Alienware as much as the next person, but I wouldn’t risk my life for them.

At least one Xbox gamer doesn’t feel the same way.

I feel you, dude. It would suck to lose something you’ve put so much time an effort into. But it would also suck to get third degree burns all over your body or die. Besides, this is why we have Cloud storage!

Would you risk your life to save your console? Head over to Wrong Button and take our poll!

These kick-ass ladies show DC how a Wonder Woman movie should be done

DC Comics has faced a lot of backlash recently. They got a lot of heat for asking potential artists to draw Harley Quinn naked in the bathtub while in the process of trying to commit suicide, the team working on Batwoman quit amid claims that DC consistently changed or blocked already approved story lines (such as allowing her to marry her fiancé), and a lot of people are wondering about why they seem so reluctant to make a Wonder Woman movie. Judging by the reaction from the Amazonian’s legion of loyal fans and admirers fans, a Wonder Woman film seems like a no brainer.

Luckily, while DC mulls it over, Rainfall Films worked with a group of awesome women to produce a stunning short film featuring the popular heroine. Directed by Sam Balcomb, the film stars Rileah Vanderbilt alongside America Young, Clare Grant, Alicia Marie, Kimi Hughes and Christy Hauptman.

Vanderbilt is fierce as Diana of Themyscira as she blocks bullets, throws spears and kicks human and creature asses alike. The Amazons are ethereal and intense as they stare down the threat to their homeland. It’s an atmospheric and moving interpretation of a realistic Wonder Woman and DC should probably be taking notes (including tapping these ladies for a feature film).

Enjoy and amazing  job to everyone involved with the film!
